Everyone, parents, and non-parents would like to see a chubby baby. Seeing baby fats around the arms and legs of a baby can look adorable and cute. We think of it as healthy and temporary, but unfortunately, it is not. This is the reason why parents need to be mindful of their baby’s weight.

A lot of parents are often concerned about the growth of their child. You might think that your baby’s fats are just extra reserves and will get lost once the baby is old enough, but it is not. The reality is that these baby fats can turn into child fats, which will turn into adult fats.

Luckily, there are simple things that parents can do to maintain the healthy weight of the baby.

1. Breastfeed is Best for Babies

Some mothers may not be able to do this at all while there are also others who cannot do it for very long. If it is possible, breastfeeding is a great way to get the baby started. Not only is breastmilk the food designed to meet the baby’s nutritional needs, it is also impossible to overfeed while breastfeeding. Even if the baby stays there for a long time, after 15 minutes, they are just sucking for comfort from their mothers and not for the milk.

2. Do Not Respond To Every Crying with Feeding Time

Babies cry for different reasons. Sometimes, they are hungry, and often times, they are tired, overwhelmed, bored, uncomfortable, scared, and just want to be held. Instead of feeding the baby, try changing the diaper or hold and soothe your child.

3. Do Not Overfeed

It is natural for parents to see a baby finish a bottle or a bowl of food. However, if the baby stops eating and signals that it is enough, it is important to respect it. If your pediatrician says that the baby is underweight and may need to eat more, then that is a different story and you need to ask the doctor what to do. However, if your baby is healthy, when he says he is done, he is done.

4. Feed with Healthy Solid Food

Once your baby is ready to eat solid foods, give him fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, legumes, and lean meats. Babies will try any food. Use this time before they start to become pickier when they build their tastes for food.

5. Get The Baby Moving

Exercise should start early. Get your baby on the floor and encourage movement. Get down on the floor with the baby. Let him crawl and learn how to walk and run. If you make an active play and exercise a normal part of the baby’s everyday life, it not only helps your child stay at a healthy weight, he can also be active as he grows up.

Good health habits not only help your child maintain an ideal weight as a baby, you are also encouraging healthiness and being active even when the child grows up.
